Built from 1866 to 1889, the National Archeological Museum of Athens is the oldest and greatest museum in Greece. Its collections range from Mycenean period gold, masks and murals to some of the greatest Archaic Kouroi (the first standing male nude sculptures) ever discovered, to high-classical funerary stelae, pottery of all periods, baroque Hellenistic sculpture and superb Roman portraits. Our presentation will focus on the most famous of the sculptures in the museum, outlining the evolution of ancient Greek art from the Bronze age to the Early Christian period.
