Goya to Impressionism. Masterpieces from the Oskar Reinhart Collection
A lecture on the exhibition at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London (until 26 May 2025)
with Chris Boïcos
“The Courtauld Gallery will present an exceptional selection Romantic, Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings in the first ever exhibition of the Oskar Reinhart Collection to be staged outside of Switzerland. This exhibition will be a unique opportunity to see some of its masterpieces – including works by Goya, Géricault, Courbet, Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Touolouse-Lautrec, Picasso, and Cézanne among others.
The collection was assembled in the first half of the 20th century by Oskar Reinhart (1885-1965), scion of one of the great textile trading companies of Europe. Reinhart bequeathed his collection and house to the Swiss confederation, and it opened as a public museum in 1970 in his elegant villa on the outskirts of Winterthur near Zurich. Among the masterpiees on show are Courbet’s provocative The Hammock (1844), Toulouse-Lautrec’s striking representation of the female performer The Clown Cha-U-Kao (1895), Manet’s groundbreaking depiction of modern life Au Café (1878), and a group of great works by Renoir and Cézanne. A further highlight is the pair of celebrated paintings by Van Gogh, A Ward in the Hospital at Arles and The Courtyard of the Hospital at Arles (1889), which depict the hospital where he had been a patient following his earlier mental breakdown in the winter of 1888.
