Artemisia. Heroine of Art
A lecture on the exhibition at the Musée Jacquemart-André, Paris
(From 19 March- 3 Aug. 2025)
with Chris Boïcos
“The Musée Jacquemart-André will be honoring the Roman artist Artemisia Gentileschi (1593 - circa 1656) daughter of the painter Orazio Gentileschi. Artemisia is one of the rare female artists of her era to have achieved international fame during her lifetime and to have been able to make a living from her painting. This Caravaggesque painter had an extraordinary destiny that took her from Rome to Florence, Naples and London. The exhibition features some forty paintings, ranging from the artist’s celebrated masterpieces – Judith and Holofernes (c. 1615), Esther and Assuerus (1628), Susannah and the Elders (1610) – to paintings of more recent attribution, as well as paintings rarely shown outside their usual place of conservation.
The exhibition aims to demonstrate the profound originality of her work, career and identity, which remain a source of inspiration and fascination to this day, a reflection of the constancy of the social and artistic dilemmas faced by female artists through the centuries.
