The Island and Fortress of Agios Nikolaos in Gaïos harbor

with Spyros Bogdanos and Chris Boïcos

Agios Nikolaos island, the footpath to the fortress.

Agios Nikolaos fortress, the 16th century gate and walls.
Agios Nikolaos fortress, the 16th century gate and walls.

Hidden behind the pine trees planted in the 1930s, are the well-preserved walls and cisterns of the 15th century Venetian fortress guarding the entrance to Gaios harbor. The Venetian walls are said to be based on an original design after Leonardo da Vinci’s fortification plans!

In our tour we will discover the various buildings of the fortress and discuss its fascinating history under the Venetians, the French and finally the British who used it until the island was ceded to the kingdom of Greece in 1864. We will also be visiting the old chapel of Agios Nikolaos, under renovation, at the south entrance of the harbor.

The tour will be conducted in English, French and Greek by Paxos historian and former mayor Spyros Bogdanos and art historian Chris Boïcos.

Please reserve in advance as we need to give your name and passport number to the Paxos municipal authorities for clearance because of the strict fire regulations on the island.

Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a water bottle!
